What Is rMQR (Rectangular Micro QR)?
rMQR is a rectangular variant of the QR code standardized in ISO/IEC 23941:2022. Unlike traditional square QR codes, rMQR codes are elongated — they can be very wide and short, or tall and narrow. This makes them perfect for labeling objects where a square code simply won't fit.
rMQR is an extremely rare feature. Abundera QR is one of the only free tools anywhere that generates rMQR codes.

Can phones scan rMQR codes?
Most phone cameras cannot scan rMQR codes. This format is designed for industrial and specialized scanners. If your QR codes need to be scanned by consumer smartphones, use standard QR codes instead.
How much data can rMQR hold?
rMQR supports up to 361 alphanumeric characters or 219 bytes of binary data. This is significantly more than Micro QR (21 chars) but less than standard QR codes (4,296 chars).
Is rMQR a new standard?
rMQR was standardized in ISO/IEC 23941:2022. It was developed by DENSO WAVE (the inventors of the original QR code) to address the need for QR codes in narrow, rectangular spaces where traditional square codes don't fit.
What aspect ratios does rMQR support?
rMQR comes in 32 size options ranging from R7×43 to R17×139 modules. The aspect ratios run from very wide and short (e.g., R7×139 is roughly 1:20) to nearly square (R17×43 is around 1:2.5). You can pick whichever shape best fits the available space on your label or product. The generator picks the smallest size that fits your data.
Where would I actually use an rMQR code?
Real-world examples: blood-tube labels in hospitals (the round vial only has a thin rectangular print area), patient wristbands at admission, cable labels in data centres, ticket strips at events, narrow cosmetic-product packaging, and shelf-edge labels in retail. Anywhere you'd otherwise have to skip a 2D code because there's no square space, rMQR fits.
Will rMQR support improve over time on phones?
Possibly. The standard is from 2022 and adoption is still slow. DENSO WAVE has shown reference scanner implementations, and some specialized SDKs (Scandit, Dynamsoft) added support quickly. iOS and Android camera teams haven't shipped native support yet. For now, treat rMQR as an industrial format and don't rely on consumer phones to read it.
How does rMQR compare to PDF417 or Aztec?
PDF417 and Aztec are two other 2D barcode formats often used for narrow labels, boarding passes, and ID cards. PDF417 is also rectangular and very mature, with broad scanner support but lower data density per area. Aztec is square. rMQR's advantage is being part of the QR family, which means scanners that already handle QR can be extended to rMQR more easily than to a foreign format.
