How SMS QR Codes Work
An SMS QR code encodes a special link that opens the default messaging app on the user's phone. The phone number is pre-filled, and you can optionally include a pre-written message. The user reviews the message and taps send — it works with iMessage, Google Messages, and any SMS app.
How to Create an SMS QR Code
- Enter the phone number that should receive the text message, including country code.
- Write a pre-filled message (optional) — this appears in the text field, ready to send.
- Download your QR code and place it wherever you want people to text you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pre-fill the text message?
Yes. Enter your desired message in the optional message field. When scanned, the user's messaging app opens with the number and message already filled in. They can edit it before sending or just tap send.
Does this work with iMessage?
Yes. The SMS QR code uses the standard sms: protocol, which opens whatever messaging app the user has as their default — iMessage on iPhone, Google Messages on Android, or any other SMS app.
Is there a character limit for the pre-filled message?
The QR code can hold the message, but keep it short for best results — under 160 characters mirrors a standard SMS. Longer messages may be split into multiple texts by the carrier.
Will the user be charged for sending the SMS?
Standard SMS rates from the user's carrier apply. On unlimited texting plans (most US, Canada, UK, EU plans today), there's no extra charge. On pay-per-message plans, the user is charged the same as any other text. iMessage between iPhones is free over Wi-Fi or data — the OS automatically picks iMessage if both ends support it.
Can I use this for short codes (like 12345)?
Yes — SMS short codes work as the destination number. This is useful for opt-in campaigns where users text a keyword like JOIN to a 5- or 6-digit short code. Just enter the short code in the phone field and the keyword in the message field. Note that short codes are region-specific (US/CA/UK each have their own).
Why does my pre-filled message sometimes get truncated?
Some Android messaging apps and some carriers cap pre-filled SMS bodies at 70-160 characters, even though the QR code itself can hold more. Keep your message short for best compatibility. If you need a longer message, point users at a URL QR code instead and host the long content on a webpage.
Does the call show as outgoing from my number?
The text is sent from the scanner's phone, not yours — so it appears as an incoming SMS to you. This is the opposite of what some people expect: a customer scans your code, opens their messaging app, and sends a text TO you. You receive the text and can reply normally.
